Trafficking & Modern-Day Slavery

Our clients' cases have played an important role in developing the law in relation to the support and protection of victims of modern slavery and human trafficking. We are committed to working sensitively and fearlessly in helping them to enforce their legal rights.

Domestic and international law requires the state to provide a range of protections to victims of trafficking. Our lawyers have considerable expertise on the legal issues that relate to that status.

Our work for individuals includes obtaining recognition as a victim of trafficking from the UK's "Single Competent Authority"; challenging failures to investigate trafficking incidents and the unsound prosecution of trafficking victims; ensuring victims receive adequate post-safe house support; and bringing civil damages claims against individual traffickers.

For NGOs we provide advice and representation as both claimants and interveners in court cases on significant policy issues. We have represented several high profile NGOs on interventions in the Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights on issues relating to the protection of trafficking victims. We work collaboratively with our NGO clients to address points of general importance that fit with their remit. This extends to policy work and training, in order to improve awareness and knowledge across the board, and to work on issues that affect victims.

Where a judicial review claim also leads to a civil damages claim, then our complimentary expertise on trafficking civil actions ensures that we can cover many of the interlinking issues facing trafficking victims. We have been involved in several significant cases that have helped shape the law in this area, and we continue to work innovatively and effectively, whilst remaining aware of the bigger picture.
